Beat the Heat: Best Shady Trails & Picnic Spots Around Billings

Montana summers are gorgeous, but let’s be honest — they can get HOT. When the sun’s blazing and you still want to get outside, the trick is knowing where to go for shade, a breeze, and a cool place to sit and sip something cold. Whether you're planning a relaxing day with the grandkids or sneaking away for a peaceful solo stroll, here are some of my favorite shady spots and picnic-perfect places around Billings.

Swords Park Trail (East End)
Not all parts of the Rims are exposed! Head toward the eastern end of Swords Park and you’ll find more trees and tucked-away benches with great views. It’s close to town but feels miles away.

Riverfront Park
This is a classic for a reason. With huge cottonwoods, winding trails along the Yellowstone River, and plenty of grassy areas, it’s a shady haven in summer. Bring a blanket and your favorite snacks.

Two Moon Park
Less crowded than Riverfront, Two Moon offers great trails under tree cover and quiet river access. It’s perfect for a walk with the dog or a nature scavenger hunt with the kids.

Pioneer Park
Tall, mature trees, a playground, and open space make this mid-town favorite ideal for a lazy afternoon picnic. Grab a sandwich, bring a ball for the kids, and you’re set.

Norm’s Island
This one’s a little more wild — bring bug spray — but the cottonwoods and creek crossings offer lovely shade and a peaceful natural setting. Great for birdwatching and wandering.

Bonus Tip: Your Own Backyard Oasis
Love the idea of shady afternoons and summer picnics? You don’t have to leave home to enjoy them. Many Billings homes come with mature trees, covered patios, or beautifully landscaped yards — perfect for enjoying long summer days without overheating.

If you're dreaming of a backyard that feels like your own private park, I can help you find it.
