Hikes, Hot Cocoa, and Happy Hearts: Enjoying Billings Before Winter Hits

October in Billings is one of my favorite seasons. The air crackles, the colors pop — and every hike feels like a gift before snow covers the world. Here are a few trails I’ve been enjoying lately (ones I haven’t featured before), plus cozy stops for warming up afterward.

🥾 Hidden-Gem Trails to Try This Month
  • Chief Black Otter Trail / Skeleton Cliff Loop

A shorter but beautifully rugged trail with great views, especially toward the cliffs and canyon.

  • Yellowstone River Loop via Two Moon Park Road

A peaceful riverside stroll in crisp air, with golden leaves mirrored in water and the sound of the river ever-present.

  • Skyway Drive Trail

Easy, quiet, and perfect for low-stakes walks when you want fresh air without a big effort.

  • Pictograph Cave State Park Trail

Short, family-friendly, and full of story — walk through history and beauty in one go.

  • Coulson Park Trails

More of a “connect with nature” walk than a mountain scramble. Trees, river views, and calm pacing.

Warm Stops to Add After Your Walk
  • Black Dog Coffee House — A familiar, cozy spot with good brews and a friendly vibe.

  • Marble Coffee Co. — Sleek, comfortable, just the kind of place to linger with a latte.

  • Maple Moose Coffee & Pop Shop — If you’ve got grandkids or want something playful, this spot combines retro soda shop flair with good coffee.

  • Rail Line Coffee — Great little downtown spot, strong coffee, and a mission behind their work.

  • Mazevo Coffee — Clean, modern, with plenty of space to rest, chat, or plan your next hike.

🍁 Fall Hiking Tips (From Me to You)
  • Layer up. Mornings can be frosty; afternoons might warm up.

  • Good boots + microspikes. The trails can get slick or muddy.

  • Bring a snack + thermos. A little hot chocolate or soup in a thermos feels heavenly post-hike.

  • Invite the grandkids. Even a short loop is a perfect mini adventure for little legs (and huge hearts).

  • Take your time. One of the best parts of fall hiking is soaking in the silence, the gold, the quiet shift before winter.
