My summer guide to trails, treats, and the best kind of weekend in Billings
One of my favorite ways to spend a summer day in Billings is a good hike followed by something delicious. There’s just something about that mix of fresh air, open space, and then a well-earned bite or drink that makes the day feel complete. Whether I’m catching up with a friend, getting some solo quiet time, or adventuring with family, I always try to end the hike with a great local stop—Billings has plenty of them.
Here are a few of my favorite hike + bite pairings—a little guide to soaking up the best of summer around here.
The Hike:
Four Dances is such a gem—it’s peaceful, scenic, and never too crowded. The views of the river and sandstone cliffs are some of my favorites, especially in the early evening when the light gets golden. It’s not a hard hike, but it feels like you’ve stepped into a whole different part of Montana.
The Bite:
Afterward, I love heading over to Stacked. It’s one of those places that just does everything well—Montana comfort food with a twist. Their burgers are amazing, but I also love their salads and seasonal specials when I want something lighter after a hike. The vibe is laid back but elevated—perfect for that post-trail reward.
The Hike:
Zimmerman is a classic. I’ve lost track of how many times I’ve walked along those rim trails—and it never gets old. You can keep it short or wander a bit further if you’re in the mood. The views across the city always remind me why Billings is such a unique place to live.
The Bite:
Afterward, Thirsty Street at the Garage is a go-to for me. They’ve got a great patio, chill atmosphere, and rotating food trucks that make it feel like something new every time. Whether I’m in the mood for a cider or just a fizzy water and a snack, it’s one of those easy places to relax and recharge after being out in the sun.
The Hike:
Phipps is a bit more rugged—and that’s exactly why I love it. There’s a sense of real adventure out there, with rock formations and winding trails that give you a great workout and serious views. I like heading out early before it heats up, and I usually come home with dusty shoes and a full camera roll.
The Bite:
Depending on the time of day, MoAV Coffee is perfect for a refreshing smoothie or one of their seasonal iced lattes. Or if I need something more filling, Black Dog Coffee House has the kind of breakfast and lunch options that always hit the spot. Plus, they’re both great local spots to run into a neighbor or two.
The Hike:
When I want something simple and relaxing (or I’ve got grandkids or pups in tow), Norm’s Island is the spot. Shaded trails, river access, and enough loops to make it interesting without feeling like a full workout.
The Bite:
Afterward? Big Dipper Ice Cream. Always. The huckleberry is a go-to, but I’ve been known to try something new every time I go. There’s nothing better than a cone in hand and sunshine on your face.
We live in a place where outdoor adventures and great local food go hand in hand and I love finding the little routines and pairings that make summer feel special.
Whether you’re exploring a new trail or the real estate market, I’m always happy to guide you. Let me know what hike + bite combo is your favorite… and if you’re ready for a new place to call home, I’d love to help you find it.
