As April winds down and the days get longer, it’s the PERFECT time to start planning some outdoor adventures around Billings! If you’re anything like me, you’ve been itching to get back on the trails — and trust me, trail season is officially HERE.
Billings is packed with amazing hikes that are just right for a quick after-work walk or a weekend outing.
A few favorites to have on your list:
Four Dances Natural Area: This peaceful spot overlooks the Yellowstone River and has wide open trails perfect for sunset hikes.
Zimmerman Park: A must if you want BIG VIEWS without leaving town. The sandstone bluffs and winding paths are great for casual hikers or families.
Phipps Park: If you want a little more of a challenge (and maybe a mountain bike ride), this is your place.
April's been warming things up, and by May, these trails are usually dry, open, and calling your name!
If you're ready for a little more exploring:
Red Lodge is always a fun spring day trip. The town is waking up for the season and the scenic drive alone is worth it.
Pictograph Cave State Park is just minutes outside of Billings and perfect for an easy hike with a side of Montana history — a great spot if you want a quick adventure without going far.
A Few Quick Tips Before You Go
Trail conditions can still be muddy in some spots, especially early mornings — waterproof shoes are your friend!
Pack layers: Mornings can be chilly and afternoons warm up fast.
Keep an eye on trail openings if you're planning mountain hikes — snow can stick around longer up high.
There’s nothing quite like this time of year in Montana — that feeling of new beginnings and outdoor adventures just around the corner. Whether you're hitting a favorite trail or checking out somewhere new, late April and May are PRIME TIME to get outside and explore.
